Community Housing - 24 Hour Support

Step 1 - Transitional Program

King Edward House - Vancouver

24 hours per day, 7 days per week

The Transitional Program is a residential setting where 6 clients live for short or longer term stays. King Edward House opened its doors in 1984 as a municipally licensed two-story, six bedroom home.  The program is located on King Edward Avenue near Fraser Street, close to major hospitals and G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre where clients have access to transit as well as a number of amenities and events in the surrounding community.

The environment provides 24 hour client support and supervision. It is licensed through the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and therefore adheres to the BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act and the Residential Care Regulations.

King Edward House often accommodates clients discharged from hospital.  The home is wheelchair friendly having accessible bedrooms, living room, bathrooms, two adapted kitchens and an elevator. Each client enjoys their own private room. The home is well maintained and clients have access to outdoor patios and small areas for therapeutic gardening.

The program provides clients with intensive short term structured programs to address their social, cognitive, emotional and life skill needs. It then assists these individuals to re-integrate into the community.  Clients receiving services are encouraged to live as independently as possible.

Client goals are clearly defined and carefully tracked to ensure progress and that care needs are being met. Functional skill evaluations may be completed with the oversight and direction of an OT. An RN provides oversight for medication administration and specific care needs. Clients are supported with medication administration and management.

King Edward House hosts events for CHSBC and clients participate in summertime BBQ’s, and holiday events throughout the year.

Step 2 - Slower Stream Program

Step 3 - 24 Hour Supported Apartments

Bodie and Dunbar Houses  -  Burnaby

24 hours per day, 7 days per week

Bodie and Dunbar Houses were opened in Burnaby to address the need for slower stream rehabilitation programs for clients who required additional time greater than our transitional program.

This 6 bedroom duplex is fully furnished, and located near Metrotown at Willingdon and Kingsway. Clients have access to transit as well as a number of amenities and events in the surrounding community. The home is well maintained and clients have access to spacious gardens and small areas for therapeutic gardening.

The four bedrooms on the upper level are considered part of Step 2.

Each client has their own private bedroom while sharing central living spaces, kitchens and bathrooms. The homes are staffed 24 hours/day and provide clients with structured programs to address their individual needs and goals.

In the 24 Hour Supported Apartments (Step 3) clients live in their own apartments that are connected to Bodie and Dunbar houses for short or long term stays. The client’s daily activities are monitored and in some cases assessed to determine their suitability to live in off-site apartments in more independent settings. Clients continue to meet regularly with staff to plan and attend activities and leisure pursuits in the community, as well as to work on identified goals.

In both steps, client goals are clearly defined and carefully tracked to ensure progress and that individual needs are being met. An OT provides direction to enhance independence and an RN provides oversight for medication administration and specific care needs. Clients are supported with medication administration and management. Clients receiving services are encouraged to live as independently as possible.

Bodie and Dunbar Houses host social events throughout the year for clients of the program as well as clients of the other CHSBC programs.
